A Hallelujah for Dame Thora Hird.
A Right Royal Occasion

The Gotherington Singers sang to royalty on 9 November 2006 at the Thora Hird Memorial Fund concert at St. Martin in the Fields. Guest of Honour was Sophie, Countess of Wessex together with Robert Powell and Kathy Staff - her of the wrinkly stockings. The concert was opened by the Salvation Army Hendon Band with the lively fanfare "Montclair" and the performance was hosted by Canon Roger Royle and Pam Rhodes.

The choir, conducted by Margaret Crompton and accompanied by Pauline Gearey, sang a variety of songs reflecting Thora's exuberant spirit. Exciting works by modern composers such as "Look to this day" by Bob Chilcott and "Good News" arranged by Ken Burton proved to be popular as well as the ever popular "As long as I have music" by Don Besig. Choir soloists Dawn Maisey and Viv Nicholson added a truly magical touch to the evening and Cheltenham baritone singer John Qualtrough contributed with a lovely selection of traditional English songs.

The magnificent yet serene atmosphere of St. Martin in the Fields enabled the choir to sing with an unsurpassed professionalism and the audience recipricated with joy and enthusiasm. Beneficiaries of the concert were the national disability charity John Grooms and the two young people who have benefited from the John Grooms Housing Association and Care Home spoke with dignity of their lives which had been given an independence which they could never have imagined without such help.

As a result of the concert, £15,000 was raised.
