How to be a Member

Come and Join us
Membership of the choir is by an informal and friendly audition with the Musical Director - Margaret Crompton. We are always delighted to hear from potential members who are prepared to give the time and dedication needed to achieve a high standard of performance. Music is learned and performed from memory so sight reading is helpful but not essential. The choir meets Monday evenings for practice. 1st, 3rd and 5th Mondays are at Gotherington Village Hall and the 2nd and 4th Mondays at Bethesda Church Hall. Great Norwood Street, Cheltenham. The rehearsals start at 7.30 pm

There are currently 45 voices in the choir, usually divided into four parts - first and second sopranos and first and second altos. Members are placed in sections by Margaret according to voice and balance. Occasional sectional rehearsals are called when new music needs to be learned.

Training

Training in choral technique has always been a part of the regular choir sessions, but in addition we have taken part in several Association of British Choral Directors (ABCD) workshops. We have also taken part in a memorable weekend workshop, conducted by David Lawrence, when the whole choir spent three days in Devon, working on their repertoire.
An in-house training day is an important part of the choir's training. We invite a noted vocal coach to work with the choir for an intensive session on current repertoires and also on some unknown pieces.
We have been lucky enough to receive training from Jeremy Jackman, Pamela Cook, John Rutter, Alison Sutton, Susan Hollingworth, Gwyn Arch, Linda Corcoran, Gillian Dibden and Robert Latham.

The Newhurst Singers
The Newhurst Singers are nine members of the Gotherington singers. They were set up in 1993 by Margaret Crompton as a Madrigal group. The groups repertoire has extended over the years to include Folk, Gospel and secular music. The group have taken part in the Cheltenham Music Festival and have won both Folk and Madrigal classes. When the main choir visited Malta, Spain and Tuscany the Newhurst Singers sang a selection of English Folk songs.
