4oth Anniversary Lunch

On Sunday 9th September 2007 members of the choir, both past and present, joined together for a special celebratory lunch presided over by our President Richard Baker. After a drink and a photo call we all settled down for a delicious three course lunch and afterwards enjoyed chatting and exchanging news with each other. The occasion was marked by a speech from Richard which was, as always, highly amusing and we all agreed how lucky we were to have him as our president. We are now looking forward to our 50th anniversary!

Gotherington Singers Grand Concert

The Gotherington Singers have built a growing reputation for themselves since they were formed 1967 by Margaret Crompton who is still their Musical Director. Starting as a small local choir in the village of Gotherington, they now have singers from a wide area in and around Cheltenham.

In celebration of their 40th Anniversary, a Grand Concert was held on 31st March 2007 at St. Matthew's Church Cheltenham where in excess of 200 guests listened to a selection of the choirs extensive repertoire. Over £2,000 was raised.

The choir began with " Anything Goes" to indicate that over the years they had sung many differing types of music and then performed a range of songs including works by Michael Head, Robert Latham, Gwyn Arch and Ken Burton.

In addition to Margaret Crompton, Vivien Nicholson is the only other founder member still singing with the choir. She sang "Love's Philosophy" by Quilter and an amusing song "Someone is sending me flowers" by Harnick & Baker.

The Newhurst Singers, a smaller group from within the choir, gave a varied programme singing Poulenc, Andrew Sisters' songs and Birthday Madrigals of John Rutter.

The guest artist Pam Taverner joined Margaret Crompton and on two pianos
they gave a wonderful rendition of Waltz from "Masquerade" by Khachaturian, Rachmaninoff's "Prelude in C sharp minor", Bach's "Sheep may safely graze" and "Scaramouche" by Darius Milhaud.

Gotherington Singers win the Gold Cup

The 79th Cheltenham Competitive Festival 2005 provided an opportunity for the Gotherington Singers to compete with other choral groups for a wide range of awards and trophies. The Gotherington Singers were very successful, winning a number of trophies including the prestigious Gold Cup awarded to the choir who gave the most memorable performance.

New Commission
In 2005, for the first time, an arrangement of a piece of music was commissioned especially for the choir.
The composer Gwyn Arch arranged the French melody "L'Amour de Moi".
The commission was to celebrate a golden wedding and the fact that the choir won the Gold Cup at the Cheltenham Competitive Festival, so it was truly a golden year.
